Species Survival Plans

SSPs Help Ensure a Future for Some Very Special Species!

Zoos have come a long from the olden days, when animals were kept in cages for the amusement of visitors. Today, most zoos are primarily conservation organizations, dedicated to ensuring a secure future for species whose status in the wild is uncertain. One of the ways we do that is through Species Survival Plans (SSP).

The Toledo Zoo works in partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and its member organizations in a comprehensive breeding and conservation program. Through these SSPs, we are able to ensure healthy, self-sustaining and genetically diverse populations of animals in zoo settings. By working together, we can make sure that these species will live on for generations to come.

The Toledo Zoo participates in the following Species Survival Plans:

African elephant Bali mynah DeBrazza's monkey Lake Victoria cichlid Sloth bear
African lion Cheetah Diana monkey Massasauga rattlesnake Snow leopard
