Opportunity Description
The Toledo Zoo offers a wide variety of unpaid internship opportunities. Animal Care positions are designated for Juniors and Seniors in upper level education courses. Other limitations may apply. Title: Animal Behavior Intern
Schedule: 40 hours per week in the summer. Hours must be completed during regular business hours (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
Student Objectives: The Animal Behavior Intern will work with our Animal Behavior Manager, developing behavioral studies. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Devloping ethograms
  • Observing and montioring animal behavior
  • Entering data based on the observations (spreadsheet applications)
  • Developing conclusions based upon that data
  • Investigating ways to use those conclusions to enhance behavior modification or achieve some other goal
 
Title: Aquarium and Marine Biology Internship
Schedule: 100 hours per semester/quarter
Student Objectives: Aquarium and Marine Biology Interns will work with Zoo staff to:
  • Provide daily care of the animals, including cleaning and food preparation
  • Assist keepers with exhibit maintenance, including lobby or other cleaning and miscellaneous maintenance
  • Assist keepers with special projects, including research and exhibit construction
 
Title: Avian Care Internship
Schedule: 8 hours per week minimum. Hours are generally completed during regular business hours (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.), any day of the week
Student Objectives: The Avian Care Intern will work with Zoo staff to:
  • Provide daily care of the animals, including cleaning, feeding, and behavioral enrichment
  • Assist keepers with exhibit maintenance, including lobby or other cleaning and miscellaneous yard maintenance
  • Assist keepers with special projects as needed
  • Support office projects, including filing and updating records
 
Title: Avian Nutritional and Behavior Internship
Schedule: 16 hours per week minimum. Hours need to be completed on weekday mornings, preferably Monday—Thursday
Student Objectives: The Avian Nutritional and Behavior Intern will work with Zoo staff to:
  • Develop a baseline of data to determine the nutritional intake of the birds in our mixed species environments
  • Make recommendations, as needed, to improve the nutritional intake of individual birds/species within the collection
  • Evaluate those recommendations, as needed, to maximize the health and welfare of the birds in the Zoo’s collection
 
Title: Entomology Internship
Schedule: 4 hours/week minimum. (Sunday - Thursday).
Student Objectives: Entomology Interns will work with Zoo staff to:
  • Provide daily care of the animals, including cleaning and food preparation
  • Assist keepers with exhibit maintenance, including lobby or other cleaning and miscellaneous maintenance
  • Assist keepers with special projects, including research and exhibit construction
 
Title: Herpetology Curatorial Internship
Schedule: 15 hours per week minimum. Hours are generally completed during regular business hours (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.), Monday - Friday
Student Objectives: The Herpetology Curatorial Intern will:
  • Perform office management duties, including filing and data entry
  • Support research initiatives as necessary
  • Provide care for the animals, including cleaning, feeding and enrichment
  • Assist keepers with exhibit maintenance, including lobby or other cleaning and miscellaneous yard maintenance
 
Title: Mammal Department Animal Care Internship
Schedule: 16 hours per week minimum during the school year. 24 hours per week minimum during the summer. Hours are generally completed during regular business hours (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.), any day of the week.
Student Objectives: Mammal Department Animal Care Interns will work with Zoo staff to:
  • Provide care of the animals, including cleaning and food preparation
  • May perform behavioral observations and make behavioral enrichment
  • Assist keepers with exhibit maintenance, including lobby or other cleaning and miscellaneous yard maintenance
  • Should be prepared to do informal public presentations before the end of internship experience
 
Title: Wildlife Management
Schedule: 6 hours per week minimum. Hours are generally completed Monday - Friday during regular business hours (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.).
Student Objectives: The Wildlife Management Intern will work with the Zoo Registrar to:
  • Enter data related to medical and behavioral records
  • File records related to the Zoo’s animal collection
 
Title: Youth Program Development Internship
Schedule: 10 hours per week minimum. Internship is weekend-focused during the school year, but very flexible during the summer. Hours are predominately served during Zoo business hours(8 a.m. - 5 p.m.).

Student Objectives: The Youth Program Development Intern will work with the Volunteer Program Staff to:

  • Develop and implement new programs for ZOOTeen volunteers
  • Coordinate team-building activities and social/educational outings
  • Provide on-grounds and off-grounds supervision of ZOOTeen activities
 
Title: Zoo Snoozin' Program Intern
Schedule: 2 - 4 hours per week minimum (average). This is a school-year based program with a heavy weekend emphasis. Hours are predominately served during the evening from 7:00 - 11:00 p.m.
Student Objectives: The Zoo Snoozin’ Program Intern will provide animal demonstrations to program attendees. Interns should be comfortable public speakers and enjoy working with children.
 
Application Requirements:
Prospective Intern Applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • Complete and submit the Volunteer Application.
  • Submit a resume.
  • Submit a cover letter highlighting any relevant past experience that you have (both practical and classroom), future goals, and how an internship at The Toledo Zoo will help you reach your educational and/or career goals.
  • Attend an informal interview at The Toledo Zoo (unless distance precludes a face-to-face interview, in which case, a phone interview may suffice).

Please be aware that the number of available openings varies from season to season and from year to year. If you are not accepted into the Internship Program at this time, you are encouraged to check in the future for possible openings.
