Summer Naturalist Program

Program Description
The Summer Naturalist Program supports the Zoo’s educational and interpretive needs in various areas within the Zoo and at specific exhibits. Summer Naturalists may be needed from May through September and will perform a variety of functions, including but not limited to:

  • Educating the public about a specific exhibit, including:
            - the biology and life cycle of these animal(s) within the exhibit
            - conservation issues, including an emphasis on local conservation efforts
and the role that everyone can play in conservation
  • Answering any questions related to the above topics and addressing any other needs required by Zoo visitors.
  • Maintaining a flow of visitors through the exhibit(s) in a timely and friendly manner, so that everyone may have an opportunity to enjoy the exhibit.
  • Monitoring the behavior of the viewing public to ensure the safety of the animals and the visitors as well as promote a positive viewing experience for everyone.

Training
Summer Naturalists will receive an orientation covering general Zoo policies,
as well as the benefits of volunteering at the Toledo Zoo. In addition, Summer Naturalists will attend a comprehensive training program identifying the major topics of importance related to the exhibit(s) as well as a walk-through of the exhibits (as available). Finally, Naturalists will receive basic training on interpretive programming and informal public interaction. These training sessions will be offered throughout April and May, with both weekday and weekend offerings.

Time Commitment
Summer Naturalists are required to

  • Complete the required training program.
  • Give at least forty (40) hours of service, including the training process, between May 1, 2008 and September 30, 2009.
  • Schedule volunteer time in advance in the Summer Naturalist Scheduling Notebook.
  • Inform the Volunteer Department if you can not make a scheduled shift.
