Whether you’re an advanced artist looking for a unique development opportunity or just starting on your art journey, these classes will provide a great chance to develop your skills while enjoying the Zoo. Courses will be led by artist and author, Eric Losh.

Sketching Birds from Life: Workshop Presented by Eric Losh
Aug. 8, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Toledo Zoo Aviary
Suitable for ages 18+
Join us for this intermediate-to-advanced sketch and paint workshop. The workshop will be primarily based in the Zoo’s Aviary building. Key areas of focus will include learning to sketch birds from life ,capturing detailed shapes and gestures of various birds. Additional instructions will be given on using watercolor to augment your sketches to produce compelling, representational paintings. Complimentary box lunch will be provided, options available at checkout.
An Introduction to Sketching Animals from Life
Aug. 9, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Gorilla Meadow
Suitable for ages 10+ (with Guardian if under 16)
Join us for this introduction to sketching workshop. The workshop will move throughout the Zoo, focusing on many of the larger mammal species. Key areas of focus will include sketching animals from life with emphasis on making quick, representation sketches that capture the overall impression of the animals.
About the Artist

Eric Losh is a birder, naturalist, illustrator, and commercial art director based in New York’s Hudson Valley, working across traditional and digital media for nonprofit and commercial clients in the U.S. and abroad. He holds a BFA in Graphic Design from West Virginia University and an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts.
His work spans wildlife illustration, children’s books, branding, and multimedia content for consumer brands and conservation organizations including the Wildlife Conservation Society and Re:wild.
As an instructor, he leads bird drawing workshops at local parks and zoos in the U.S., and birding field sketching tours in Colombia. Driven by a passion for nature, Eric aims to inspire conservation and understanding of the natural world through drawing and painting.
