In 2021, the Toledo Zoo launched T.U.R.T.L.E., an internship program aimed at providing transformative experiences for youth while jump starting careers in science fields. To achieve this, the Toledo Zoo is addressing common barriers to inclusion, such as specialized equipment costs, scheduling conflicts, and limited access to transportation.
During the internship, T.U.R.T.L.E technicians gain valuable skills for future careers. These include technical and scientific skills such as wildlife handling, animal husbandry, data collection, genetic sampling, radio-telemetry, marking, and identification. Technicians also develop leadership skills, including public presentations, networking with wildlife experts, professional development and mentorship opportunities.
Ultimately, the T.U.R.T.L.E program is a place for high school students to feel supported, challenged, and celebrated in conservation biology.
Looking ahead, we are seeking stable funding in order to provide job security, expand our capabilities, and broaden our outreach.
