With a Heat Wave on the Way, the Toledo Zoo Offers 10 Ways to Stay Cool

Toledo, OH — June 23, 2025 — As the region braces for a heatwave, the Toledo Zoo is helping guests stay safe, cool and comfortable while still enjoying everything the Zoo has to offer. From misting splash zones to shaded trails and indoor exhibits, there are plenty of ways to beat the heat while making summer memories with family and friends.

Here are 10 ways to stay cool at the Toledo Zoo during the upcoming heatwave:

1. Start early with a morning visit
The Zoo is opening one hour early at 9 a.m. every day from June 23-29. Guests will have a chance to explore attractions, like the Nancy L. & Martin Davidson Barnyard and Tower Ridge Giraffe Feed Deck, in the cooler morning temperatures before the summer sun peaks.

2. Stay late during Twilight Evenings
With extended hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays, guests can visit the Zoo during cooler evening temperatures and enjoy a peaceful twilight stroll through the exhibits. Admission is until 8 p.m., Zoo closes at 9 p.m.

3. Make a splash
The splash pad in the Aquarium Adventure Trail is a hit with kids and parents alike, offering refreshing water jets and interactive fun during the hottest parts of the day.

4. Scoop up a sweet BOGO treat
All guests that purchase an ice cream cone get one free at Northern Ice and Birdfeeder. No coupon needed.

5. Wade into the Aquarium
The air-conditioned Aquarium is the perfect retreat, where visitors can explore a world of fish and marine life in cool, wondrous setting.

6. Chill with the polar bears
Arctic Encounter offers a breezy escape for visitors to watch polar bears and seals in a climate-controlled environment inspired by the far north.

7. Discover the ProMedica Museum of Natural History
Head indoors to explore engaging exhibits and hands-on displays while enjoying the air conditioning.

8. Catch a breeze on the train and carousel
Enjoy the breeze on the safari railway or while spinning on the African carousel, perfect for guests looking to relax and cool off while taking in the sights. Ride operations are weather dependent.

9. Explore Nature’s Neighborhood indoor play
Kids of all ages can escape the heat with cool, hands-on activities like pet care play, dress-up, animal encounters and the Butterfly Hut.

10. Find shade in Tembo Trail
Relax in the shaded viewing area near the hippos and otters, where the covered exhibits provide a much-needed break from the sun.
